HAVING TEETH PULLED ON SUBOXONE

I need some help, I have to have a tooth pulled tomorrow that broke off yesterday. I am taking suboxone 8/2 once a day. My Dr. said I could take the pain meds the dentist will give me if the pain gets unbearable if I need to. My question is will the hydrocodone's pain killing properties still work with the suboxone? I have had 2 dry sockets from teeth pulled before and the pain is very awful!! Can anyone help me please????

I've had lots of dental work while on buprenorphine and this is what I've found. First, if I stagger my dose of buprenorphine, it helps with the pain. So if you take 2mg at a time every 4 to 6 hours, it should help.

I don't know if the hydrocodone will help. Layering opioids on top of buprenorphine is a good way to control pain, but only if there is enough of the extra opioid. Usually the dentist will give you a script for several 5mg pills. That's not really enough to add pain relief, but it can't hurt.

Here are a couple of ideas. One, ask your dentist if he can put in a long lasting amount of nerve block. If it lasted 8 hours, for example, that would help in the initial hours.

I've had dry socket before I was on buprenorphine and it does hurt, but I gave it to myself on purpose to get more pills. Be careful and you won't get dry socket. Are you a smoker? Try to smoke as little as possible! No sucking through a straw. Try to eat soft foods and rest your mouth as much as possible.

Also, after a couple of hours you should be able to take NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen. NSAIDs are the most effective pain relieving drugs for dental pain, in my opinion.

One last idea. Your worst pain is probably going to be on the first night. This is when I would take more of the hydrocodone. I would take around 20mg the first night at bedtime. A larger amount is more likely to be effective. Hopefully, these ideas will get you through the worst of the pain. This is exactly what I would do myself if I were in your position.

Thanks for the help. I am a smoker so that is my problem with dry sockets. I think I will wait to fill the meds the first day and see, I have 1 10 mg hydro here that’s been here for all the months I have been on suboxone so I can take it at night if I need to until I can fill the script the next morning.

Hi Tracker,

You can take Hydrocodone along with Suboxone. I def like the idea of staggering your dose 2mg at a time, but for extra pain relief (if you need it) you CAN TAKE hydrocodone together with Suboxone for pain. Just be mindful that it is just temporary and maybe give them to someone else who can give them to you "as Needed"

Can I kindly ask WHY you would keep pills around during recovery????? Seems like an extremely bad idea in my opinion.

I did not know I had the pill until the other day I found it in my truck. I gave it to my girlfriend to keep and see how this tooth extraction goes. Hopefully I won’t have to have anything and that pill will go down the toilet. Even now knowing there is a pill here I have no desire at all to take it. The subs are really doing great for me. If I had know that pill was in my truck months ago I would have flushed it then. Thanks for all

I’ve had a few bk teeth pulled while taking suboxone and the pain wasn’t ever bad enough to need pain medication. I know everyone’s pain threshold is different but it really isn’t a pain that’s so bad that ibuprofen couldn’t handle. That’s just my experience, I didn’t need anything extra for pain. Of course if there’s complications like a dry socket, you’ll definitely probably need them, but just a regular tooth extraction I would think you don’t even need an opiate at all. That’s just me

I've heard taking advil and tylenol (rotating back and forth) works best for tooth pain. I think if you try the pills it will just be a disappointment and wont even give you any relief anyways. Just plan on taking OTC meds and keep a positive mindset! Being positive can really do wonders. Good luck

Dunno, i've being doing it for years and i've always told them what i'm taking and how many mg/day and they just make a little bit different anesthesia mix for me and everything was okay.
Never had questions why i'm taking pills of do i have prescription for them
