I'm fairly new to this forum and really have only seen problems men are having with their sex lives. I'm 38 years old, was on vicodin/hydros on and off for 8+ years. I have been on suboxone for 2 months now, and it pretty much saved my life. I have absolutely no problems except 1. 1 BIG ONE, no matter how hard I/We try (my husband and I), I cannot orgasm. Ugh... Even on hyrdos I had no problem with orgasm, sure some times I had to try but I never just couldn't achieve an awesome ending. I don't think Testosterone is what I need. Any help out there, please? I'm on one 8mg suboxone strip a day. Thank you, Nichole

Nicholeinaz, I feel for ya. I can relate to your issue. I am just now getting my mojo back and I am in the process of tapering off sub. I am at 2mg. Before I was on a maintance dose, I had a hell of a time achieving orgasm. I think 1 out of 3 tries was my odds. It sucks. I took some ibuprofin and xanax and those seemed to help. (I know you are not suppose to take benzos while on sub, but I have been on them for a couple years for anxiety & sleep issues) That is just MY experience. Maybe once you are stable and you get to the lowest possible dose that you need to maintain sobriety, you will find that you have an easier time with this. I am so sorry that it seems you have to compromise a healthy sex life for sobriety. it is just NOT FAIR! Good luck. I sure hope you are able to find a solution. Many blessings.

Being a guy, I can't give too much input on this.

But I've known a couple of women who were on buprenorphine treatment (Subutex / Suboxone). Both of them told me they had really blunted libidos on higher doses of buprenorphine. Lowering this dose reduced the sexual side-effects. Neither mentioned anything about not achieving orgasm, but the two are often related.

Have you still got the same desire to have sex? Is it just the lack of orgasm?

Anorgasmia is a side-effect of a lot of painkillers / psych meds unfortunately.

im a guy, so i wont be much help. i had this flacid problem on methadone. it was such a 'small' problem, i went to my reg doc. he did bloodwork and found i had vitually NO testosterone, after years of abusing opioids. he said this is very common . now, i take a shot every month of T and i'm riding high. i'm not saying you need T, but maybe some woman? hormone is depleted? or off balance? i know this sucks, but see a doc..

Things will go back to normal kind of when your Suboxone dosage is smaller... lillyval knows alot about this stuff, PM her she is a fantastic person, 8mg is alot of medication, I know it would equal a ton of Vicodin, Good Luck ,Mike (1mg per day for a year now and giving a drug called strattera a ride) !!!

Sexual side effects are common for sub treatment, unfortunately for us! But I must disagree with the statement that 8 mg is a really high dose. It's not really too high or too low, pretty average dose, in my opinion. Now that's not to say that you can't experiment with (or speak to your doctor about) lowering your dose a couple mg to see if that helps. It does help many people with bad side effects when they drop their dose.

But know that you are not alone in this.

Hi Nichole, I am in AZ too! There seems to be a lot of people from AZ that come thru here. I wonder if its just that I notice it more or if there is a big opiate problem in AZ.

I have this problem too, I can orgasm but it definately takes a lot longer. I have posted about this here before. I had the same problem on oxy. I have no medical research to base this on but I always figured opiates decreased your sensitivity. Since they reduce your feeling of pain it just makes sense to me that they would reduce your feeling of pleasure as well. Opiates can do strange things to your hormones too so that could be a factor as well.

I am on 16mg a day and agree with hat that 8mg is a pretty average dose. Just like any med the lower your dose the less side effects you will have. So if its a big problem for you you could try dropping down to say 6mg and see if that helps. You just want to make sure your dose still keeps your cravings and withdrawls at bay. Sorry you are having a hard time and I hope you can get it taken care of.

To the OP-

I've had this problem too. I enjoyed the sex, but sometimes it didn't FEEL quite as good........AND, I had a difficult time reaching the big O.

I agree with Breezy, I think the Sub possibly decreases our sensitivity. While on Oxy, I actually felt numb.

I dose twice a day. I know a couple times I waited to take my evening dose until after my husband/I had sex. This seemed to help. I don't know if you split your dose, or take it all at once. Maybe you could try jumping in the sack before you dose?? Morning sex can be EXCITING!!

Just a suggestion, hope everything works out!

I want to say thanks to everyone for the suggestions, I go back to my doc on the 17th and will ask him about lowering my dose, but it is definitely worth a try... I will keep everyone updated, and again thank you.

I would definitely lower your dose,as long as cravings are at bay.I have always said I was a tough nut to crack but could still achieve the big O.I couldnt at all when I was using. On the Sub I could around 8 mg.Now that Ive been on 16 it takes FOREVER.Like an hour with a vibe forever.Ive gotten to the point I dont want to have sex with the hub because its too much of an effort and takes way too long.Ive tried to lower my dose.At 12 it took longer but happened.Had to go back up to 16 where it takes forever.I am working on getting back down.To me thats important,to O with my husband so I need to work on coming down on my dose again.

I am a male so i cant relate to much. But after reading some of the womens post in thid thread. I can say i have noticed that when i was single and hooking up with different girls from different clicks. That the girls i have hooked up with who were heavy opiate users took much more forplay and time to get them, god i dont know how say this well ok wet before intercourse. VS. Hooking up with girls who didnt really use any drugs period would be good and ready much quicker and were much easier on my part to get them to climax. While the girls who used would take much longer sometimes not at all so you gals gave me a lil confidence boost:->:->

This is just a suggestion maybe try having sex in the morning before you take your sub. So at least your dose from tje day before would have woren off at least some what. Hope everything works out. I know for myself that while on suboxone my sex drive was def down and as soon as i switched to methadone a few month ago my gf has noticed a huge change and now our sex life has been as good if not better than when we first meet. And i was on sub for five years so this has been incrediable for us.

Ok, sorry it took me so long to get back to you guys, well my doctor did give me some hope!! First he lowered my dose to 6 mg AND have me split my dose. 2nd, he gave me a medicine to take about an hour before sex and before my 2nd dose of suboxone. IT WORKED!!!! I am so happy, all it is is an anti-hystamine so I wasn't hopeful at all. It's called cyproheptadine 4mg. It took a bit of time, about 20 minutes but it did work.... IM SO HAPPY. I hope this info helps someone else. The RX was only $8.00 for 30 and I do not have insurance so it was totally affordable. Thanks everyone for your stories and opinions... :)

Nicholeinaz THANK you for the info. I know many ladies will be very happy to have this bit of info. Interresting it is only an antihistamine. I think the twice a day dosing is also a great help for this issue. And so cheep YAAAY for cheep O's!

Wow - something that might counteract this side effect! And I just looked it up and found this: "Cyproheptadine can relieve SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction and drug-induced hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating)." So maybe it will help the other side effect - sweating, too! Wouldn't that just be the shit?

I'm going to have to talk to my doctor about this. Is it only available as a prescription, I assume?

The real women's viagra!

It will be interesting to know how much of it came from the antihistamine, and how much came from your dose reduction / split dose.

It's really strange bboy how methadone doesn't have as much of a side-effect profile. My testosterone levels / sex drive was quite healthy on methadone. One of my ex-partners thought heroin made it easier for her to reach orgasm. Makes me wonder if these side-effects come from the partial-agonist thing?

Yeah Tear that is interesting, however I had the same problem when I was on oxy, maybe even more so depending on when I had taken it compared to when we had sex. Maybe it's just another one of those "we are all different things".

The last 2 weeks or so I have been taking mostly 12mg rather than 16mg and have noticed my desire has increased quite a bit. I haven't been able to see if I can orgasm easier at this dose since my husband is in NC and I am still in AZ. Come to think of it maybe my desire has increased because my husband hasn't been around? Or maybe a bit of both?

Nichole, thanks for the info! I see my Dr today and I am definately going to ask him about that medication.

Thank you for the information about this medication. I have both of those problems. No big O and I sweat something terrible, so I am going to give my dr. a call First thing Monday morning. I thought both of them were because I just turned 40! lol...I love this forum. You find the best info. I am relatively new to this forum and I find the information and support so helpful.

Summer was horrible!!!I literally needed to carry a napkin or towel around with me because I would need to wipe my face off. It is so gross! I used to always be cold and keep the thermostat at like 72(i know not green) now I am comfortable sitting at 64 and if I am doing any housework or moving it needs to be closser to 62 or 60. This is the first time in my life I have wanted winter to come. Thank goodness Michigan has cold winters! lol.

For me most of the side effects are a welcome trade off because my life is so much better on Suboxone. But the big O problem is a big problem. I have been working hard to restore my relationship with my husband after 3 years of having an affair with OXY. As much fun as it can be working toward the big moment, the frustration on my part and my husband feeling like he failed( I reassure him it not him, it is me) does do a number on our physical relationship. He now has zero interest. And I really believe that a healthy sex life is part of a healthy relationship.

Another question about side effects... a little embarrassing, but here goes.... does it cause any one else to have a hard time urinating? I have been having trouble with bladder issues. Blaming this too on age, but am thinking maybe a lot of these age related symptoms are really side effects of the medicine.
