Romeo, GoingStrong, and a couple others have me thinking about music and how inspiring it can be. Are there any particular lyrics that have helped you or inspired you on your journey to sobriety?

The band I'm in was just practicing a song tonight called, "Hold Us Together", and it totally reminds me of this forum at its best. I'm grateful to be a part of this group of people, who are trying to hold each other up and make the journey together.

Here are the lyrics that remind me of this place:

"And love will hold us together, it can make us a shelter to weather the storm,
And I'll be my brother's keeper, so the whole world will know that we're not alone.

This is the first day of the rest of our life, this is the first day of the rest of our life,
And even in the dark we can still see the light, it's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright."

Anyone else get inspiration from music?

Amy

AMY!!!! Great idea!!! I hope this thread explodes with peoples music choices of what inspired them. I love your lyric choice!!

When I was in wd, another member, Kinetix, turned me onto this song. It's called Fader by the Temper Trap. It's got a real upbeat tempo and I must have listened to this song 1000 times. Even today when I listen to it, it brings me right back to where I was during that period of my wd. I can see myself sitting on our couch, headphones on and this song blasting in my ears. It gave me energy and hope. Here's the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L18tjO2GYnU

The lyrics that always give me goosebumps are these:

Bless this mess, We tried our best, Thats all that we can do
While the angels walk with the lonely ones, In the cold rain to rescue you

That first line reminds me of how I buggered things up during my addiction, but I asked God to Bless it and forgive me, the next line is God sending His angels to rescue me, they're wallking through cold rain to rescue me.....that's how much they love me. I'm not ashamed to admit this song made me cry several times.

I actually like all the lyrics to this song, for me, they really all spoke to me during my wd.

I have several other songs that helped drag me through my wd, I'll post them a little later on.

What an amazing thread this could be!!! Great idea!! I get so much from music, but for some reason, any time I hear these lyrics,
I get goosebumps....you don't have to be a fan of country to appreciate these lyrics either...

You'll Be There by George Strait

Hope is an anchor and love is a ship,
Time is the ocean, and life is a trip
You don't know where you're going til you know where you're at
And if you can't read the stars, you better have a map!

A compass and a conscience, so you don't get lost at sea,
Or on some lonesome island where noone wants to be

From the beginning of creation, I think our maker had a plan
For us to leave these shores and sail beyond the sand
And let the good light guide us through the waves and the wind
To the beaches in a world where we have never been

And we'll climb up on that mountain ya'll, we'll let our voices ring
Those whove never tried it, wil be the first to sing

(chorus)
Whoa my my
I'll see you on the other side
If I make it
And it might be a long hard ride
But I'm gonna take it
Sometomes it seems that I don't have a prayer
Let the weather take me anywhere
But I know that I wanna go
Where the streets are gold
Cause you'll be there

You don't bring nothin with you
And you can't take nothin back
I aint ever seen a hearse with a luggage rack
So I've torn my knees up prayin,
Scarred my back from fallin down
Spent so much time flyin high
Til I'm face first in the ground

So if you're up there watchin me
would you talk to God and say
Tell him I might need a hand
to see you both someday

(repeat chorus)

I actually got chills typin them...LOL! HOpe you enjoy....and please....post more...I'm checking out everything you guys post!

 yes, great topic, amy

I already have talked about this song, but here's the lyrics,,,,,,,,

I've been lost in the darkness for so long
I can't see the light
I've been strung out, burned, left out, and hung out to dry.
So I say to myself that I wanna get better
Hidin' from the truth, I can't last forever

(Chorus)
Jesus help me
Obviously, I can't help myself
I've got nobody else
Send me an Angel
Someone to strangle
That ol' demon that's haunting me there on the shelf
I can't help myself.

My excuses are so old and tired, hell I forgot 'em
I keep fallin' and crawlin' and drownin' down here on the bottom
Yeah I pushed back my brothers said good-bye to my friends
When you get in this deep the hell never ends

(Repeat Chorus)

Give me a reason to live; show me a sign
I'm on the edge; goin' out of my mind
I'm down on my knees; I'm beggin' you please make me somebody else
I can't help myself
I need something stronger, pour it all over me

(Partial Chorus)

Send me an Angel
Someone to strangle that ol' demon
'Cause you know that I never will
I can't help myself

Lord, I can't help myself.

I actually listened to this a few times WHILE still using, and it made me want to be better, to quit
what I was doing to everyone around me.
But, it still took me awhile.
LOL
I still listen to it, alot. And Im not even religious, but something about this song, just 'gets' me.
what can I say????

other than that, shinedown is a great group to listen to. I think music is one of the only REAL universal languages.

This song was actually a very big inspiration to me to get sober and stop putting my husband through hell! He was always so supportive, and understanding, but there were times when I really thought he would walk away. There were times when I thought he should walk away, most people probably would have... I listened to this song over and over and this was the song that did it for me... I tried to link the youtube video to it, but it might now work right.

"Lose You" Pete Yorn

I’m taking a ride off to one side
It is a personal thing.
Where?
When I can’t stand
Up in this cage I’m not regretting.

I don’t need a better thing,
I’d settle for less,
It’s another thing for me,
I just have to wander through this world
Alone.

Stop before you fall
Into the hole that I have dug here,
Rest even as you
Are starting to feel the way I used to,
I don’t need a better thing
(Just to sound confused)
Don’t talk about everyone,
I am not amused by you.

I’m gonna lose you,
Yeah I’m gonna lose you
If I’m gonna lose you,

I’m gonna lose you,
Yeah I’m gonna lose you
If I’m gonna lose you
I’ll lose you now for good

Another one, but, this ones kind of really cheesy... lol I was driving down the highway to pick up my husband on the very first day I started subs and Miley Cyrus, "The Climb" came on the radio. I cranked it up and before I knew it tears were streaming down my face. I bawled for the first time ever hearing that song. That day I took a big step and walked into that drs. office and finally started the suboxone after being so scared. This song just broke me down then. It was such a battle, it still is, but gotta keep climbin...

"The Climb" Miley Cyrus

I can almost see it
That dream I am dreaming
But there's a voice inside my head saying
"You'll never reach it"

Every step I'm taking
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking

But I gotta keep trying
Gotta keep my head held high
There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be a uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

The struggles I'm facing
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes might knock me down
But no, I'm not breaking
I may not know it
But these are the moments that
I'm gonna remember most, yeah
Just gotta keep going
And I, I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on

'Cause there's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be a uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb, yeah!

There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Somebody's gonna have to lose

Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb, yeah!

Keep on moving, keep climbing
Keep the faith, baby
It's all about, it's all about the climb
Keep the faith, keep your faith, whoa

I'm a huge TOOL fan and I find their lyrics to be quite poetic.
Here's a good one titled "Parabola" - I find this song to be very transcendental.

We barely remember, who or what came before this precious moment.
We are choosing to be here, right now. Hold on, stay inside...
This holy reality, this holy experience. Choosing to be here in...

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal all this pain is an illusion.

Alive... I...

In this holy reality, in this holy experience. Choosing to be here in...

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal all this pain is an illusion.

Twirling 'round with this familiar parabol.
Spinning, weaving 'round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this
chance to be alive and breathing,
a chance to be alive and breathing.

This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment. Remember; we are eternal,
all this pain is an illusion.

Invisible_shadow....LOL....I thought I was the only screwball who got choked up and teary eyed while listening to The Climb!! I had never heard the song before and my daughter played it for me one day and, well....I got choked up real good. I was still in wd at the time, so that's the excuse I'm using for getting choked up!!

JenW....I love Tool. Do you have their Undertow CD, it's one of the best CD's ever!! I've never heard of "Parabola", but I'm gonna go listen to it now!

Yes, Romeo - I do have Undertow. I actually have several TOOL albums - and I agree, Undertow definitely rocks. Parabola is from the album, Lateralus, which is another goodie! You should check it out.
I don't know that I've heard all of the songs that have already been mentioned... I might have to go listen to some of them! I know I mentioned that I love TOOL, but I enjoy so many other bands and types of music (my husband and I just went to see Alan Jackson a couple weeks ago - he made me cry). If I can think of some other good tunes that I find inspirational, I will certainly post. In the meantime, I'm going to keep checking this thread because I love to hear from everyone else.

Haha Romeo, I know right? I had heard the song, I have a friend with an 11 year old and she used to play it a lot, but I never really payed attention to the lyrics, ya know? That first evening on subs, when I heard it, I bawled! Miley Cyrus isn't my kind of music, I'm no teeny bopper, but the lyrics are so very meaningful about the struggles we've all gone thru and how we just gotta keep movin... You def don't need to be ashamed at gettin choked up on that one in my opinion. I think it just shows that you have real emotions and you've been thru so much. I'm glad your little girl played that one for ya. Sometimes our kids can just do the most perfect little things for us when we need it most.

I listen to a lot of different music too like most of you. I listen to a lot of country too. JenW, Alan Jackson has a lot of good ones that get to me. "Remember When", boy that one chokes me up every time I hear it. It's not about addiction, but the lyrics remind me so much of my parents and now that I'm a mother and wife and I'm watching my daughter grow up so quickly, it just means so much more. I cry every time.

I'm sure I'll think of more too and I'll post em. I really like this thread! Keep em coming guys!

Hey, Invisible, Just so you know, it was that exact song that made me cry at the Alan Jackson concert. And I'll cry every time I hear it on the radio too! It also reminds me of my mom and dad (my mom died when I was 15) and now I'm married and 31 weeks pregnant so it really brings on the waterworks each and every time I hear it! I love Alan Jackson - he has so many good songs!

Invisible_Shadow, I meant to say this earlier, but forgot. I put my wife through the same crap that you put your husband through and MANY times I thought she would be better off just leaving me, but she never did. Actually, at one point, I suggested she leave because I thought I was hopeless....she refused because she always saw something in me that took me FOREVER to see in me.....that I was a good guy who was worth being loved. Shortly after I suggested she leave me, I found Suboxone. The timing was beautiful.

Oh yeah, about our kids doing the most perfect things to help us.....I hear ya. Just the fact that my daughter loves me and thinks I'm the best dad around makes me want to continue on the path I'm on. My daughter and my wife (and this forum) have provided me with terrific inspiration. I wouldn't be where I'm at today without them.

OK, another song. Most of the songs I'm posting come from my time in wd. During wd, it's easy to lose hope and think that you're all alone. That's when I needed inspiration the most and music has always moved me so powerfully.

This one is Sunburn by Fuel. I'm just gonna post a few snippets of lyrics and the link to the song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR7RK9Syy2Y

And you were gone
You were not there for me (during my wd, I felt like God had left me)
And i cursed the sky and begged the sun to
Fall all over me
This life's not living, baby
Living ain't free
If i can't find my way back to me (I HAD to find my way back to me, I was DETERMINED to find my way back to me)
Let the sun fall down (no way in hell was I gonna let the sun fall down on me, I was going to make it, no matter what!!!)

Until my eyes cry out
'Til my head is free from doubt
Til my lungs sigh right out
'Til I'm wiser

(those last four lines sum up my wd, I was gonna hold on until I was cried out, until my head was free from doubt, until my lungs could no longer hold breath and it was all worth it because that whole experience made me wiser)

I love all the posts on here, many of these songs I've never heard before and they're all great!!!

This is my go-to song for when I need to feel better and I think I listened to it every day when I was tapering. I'd walk and walk with my headphones listening to music but this song was that one that just made me feel like it was going to be ok.

If She Wants Me

I wrote a letter on a nothing day
I asked somebody 'Could you send my letter away'?
You are too young
to put all of your hopes in just one envelope

I said goodbye to someone that I love
It's not just me, I tell you it's the both of us
And it was hard
Like coming off the pill that you take to stay happy

Someone above has seen me do alright
Someone above is looking with a tender eye
Upon your face, you may think you're alone but you may think again

If I could do just one near perfect thing I'd be happy
They'd write it on my grave, or when they scattered my ashes
On second thoughts I'd rather hang about and be there with my best friend
If she wants me

And far away somebody read the letter
He condescends to read the words I wrote about him
And if he smiles, it's no more than a genius deserves
For all his curious nerve and his passion

I'm going deaf, you're growing melancholy
Things fall apart, I don't know why we bother at all
But life is good and it's always worth living at least for a while

If I could do just one near perfect thing I'd be happy
They'd write it on my grave, or when they scattered my ashes
On second thoughts I'd rather hang about and be there with my best friend
If she wants me

If you think to yourself 'What should I do now'?
Then take the baton, girl, you better run with it
There is no point in standing in the past cause it's over and done

I took a book and went into the forest
I climbed the hill, I wanted to look down on you
But all I saw was twenty miles of wilderness so I went home

If I could do just one near perfect thing I'd be happy
They'd write it on my grave, or when they scattered my ashes
On second thoughts I'd rather hang about and be there with my best friend
If she wants me

PS - What is up with song lyric websites that won't let you copy the lyrics. SO ANNOYING.

Huge huge fan. Seen them live 6 times now. All first, second, or third row besides festivals. Have all signed posters tpp. Maynard does say fuck all you junkies and fuck your short memories though : ( however, i was a pill head and he contradicts himself a lot, he was friends with Layne Stayley so.

But yeah, so Tool

Also, Smashing Pumpkins for sure, Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree, Porcupine Tree, Syd Barrett have all helped me through dark times of addiction.
