I young woman I recently met in a recovery group was addicted to Fiorinal. For those who don't know it is an aspirin/caffeine combo with a very small amount of barbiturate in it. She was prescribed them for migraines, started having rebound headaches, started taking more, etc. until it became a problem. She also said she took an occasional Ativan. She didn't need detox or treatment. She voluntarily went to an outpatient group for healthcare professionals.

What's so bad about this? Her doctor decided to treat her by putting her on Suboxone - 8 mg/day! I took her aside and asked her if any opiates were involved at all. She said no. She has absolutely no idea what she has gotten herself into. Adding to my belief that her doctor is clueless is that she is prescribed 2mg 4x/day.

I really didn't say too much to her, but I did share with the group my experience detoxing off Suboxone. Hopefully that will be enough to get her asking some questions. I feel so bad for her. She's a really nice girl with no prior drug or alcohol history.

Fiorinal comes in a preparation that contains codeine, I wonder if maybe she was on Fiorinal with Codeine?

You mention that you already asked her if any opiates were involved and she said no, but I still have to wonder why her doctor would put her on suboxone if she wasn't taking the Fiorinal with Codeine.

I thought of that, too, but it sounds like she had a pretty small habit. So even a little bit of codeine wouldn't justify 8mg Suboxone.

I'm surprised she's not sick from the Suboxone ?
