I was on methadone for almost 3 years and during the last 6 months I tapered down to 13 mgs then switched over to suboxone, 2 mgs and I am now tapering off of suboxone. I have consulted two different doctors on how to taper - one doctor gave me what he called "The Proper Suboxone Taper Schedule" along with a promise that if I follow this schedule EXACTLY I will not suffer from any withdrawal symptoms. Has anyone heard of this "proper method"? Here it is:

Take your dosage every 24 hours as follows (each number is one 24-hour period and numbers are in milligrams):

2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1.5, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1.5, 2, 2, 2, 1.5, 2, 2, 1.5, 2, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 1, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 1, 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 1, 1.5, 1.5, 1, 1.5, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 0.5, 1, 1, 1, 1, 0.5, 1, 1, 1, 0.5, 1, 1, 0.5, 1, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.25, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.25, 0.5, 0.5, 0.25, 0.5, 0.25, 0.25, 0.25, 0.25, 0.25, 0.25, 0.25, 0, 0.25, 0.25, 0.25, 0.25, 0, 0.25, 0.25, 0.25, 0, 0.25, 0.25, 0, 0.25, 0, 0, 0.25, 0, 0, 0, 0.25, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0.25, ZERO

Maybe that's an effective taper, but I have never tried it. I tried inserting a taper schedule like that into the taper chart I created, but noticed the reductions and increases back up the previous amounts effected the level of Suboxone in your body negatively. It created a sharp decrease in your body levels.

That was the reason why I chose to decrease gradually throughout my entire taper. Dropping in the smallest amounts possible will keep Suboxone consistent in your body, therefore reducing the amount of withdrawals.

I dropped by .063mg every week, but it's ultimately up to you and what makes you comfortable.

Good luck with your taper!

Because we're all a bit different, I don't think there is any perfect taper, but the one you showed us looks pretty solid. I've seen people over the years do a taper like the one you're showing and they seemed to do fine with it.
