Hi Ty! I'm not an expert, only been on Suboxone going on 4 months now. But I have done some tapering. The first month or so I was on it, I took 12mg/day. Most of the time I took it all in one dose because that seems to be good for me in terms of breaking the habit of 'medicating' everytime I feel physically or mentally uncomfortable.
Anyway, 12mg/day for the first month - 6 weeks. At that point I decided to drop to 8mg/day because most of the reading I've done indicates that dropping down to as low as 4mg or so is not a big deal. So I took 8mg/day for a couple of months with zero problems. Not any change in the way I felt when I was on 12mg/day.
Then around a month ago I started having some side effects for the first few hours after I dosed each day (mild nausea, flushing, itching and a weird pseudo-high feeling but not in a good way) so I dropped down to 4mg/day. With that drop I experienced a little bit of runny nose and some mild leg aches, but otherwise no big deal at all and the side effects I had been having got somewhat better.
Well, this made me think - hey I'll just keep dropping then. Well, knowing that the tapering gets harder after you get under 4mg/day sometimes, I slowed it down but went ahead after only about 10 days on the 4mg/day and dropped again to 3mg. Again, no problem. So I decided to go ahead and try to drop again after ~10 days at 3mg. Not my best idea. After about the 3rd-4th day at trying 2mg/day I started feeling pretty lethargic, sleepy, cranky, leg achey, just not good. I found myself taking an extra 1-2mg piece of Sub in the evening. So I have now decided to chill out and slow down. I was feeling good at 3-4mg/day so I've decided to go back to that and hold for a while.
Sorry - more info than you were probably looking for, but you know me!! Rambling, rambling!
I would be surprised if you have any problems at all with dropping from 12 to 8. Maybe just drop that 3rd dose out. Or if there is a reason why you really need the 3 times a day dosing I guess you could a 4mg piece for your first dose, then 2mg and 2mg. Or if you're really nervous and not in a hurry just drop to 10mg/day - 4mg/4mg/2mg.
Of course you should consult with your doctor before changing things but there is a suggestion for you. I bet you'll be like me and do fine with these drops from the higher doses. Hope so. Let us know.
