Hello folks,

Newbie here. I have been reading this forum for the past few months and wanted to say a few things.

First, thanks for all the valuable information that you all share. I have found it very helpful to me on my road to recovery.

A little background on me. Promise to keep it short. I am 31, have a wife and two kids. I started using opiates(hydrocodone), about 3 years ago. I have always drank beer and occasionally used drugs, just a little coke and pills here and there. However, when I started having marriage and family issues I began stealing Hydros from my sick mother to make the depression and pain go away. Of course this led to illegally purchasing pills, and moving from hydros to Perks and Oxy. After my mother passed away in March 2009 my usage really got out of hand and I was using over 150-200 mgs of oxy or hydros/day. My marriage was hanging by a string (we have seperated twice since this began), and I was spending over $3000/month on pills. My drug use caused me to make very poor decisions and I went from having a great job to almost being unemployable. I finally made the decision to get my life back and did some research on Suboxone.

I got my first script for Subs on Jan 4, 2010. The sub doc was a real ass and didn't explain how to take them, when to take them or anything. He was writing me a script for 75 subs before he said a word to me!! I stayed on 20mgs a day for 4 days before relapsing. The subs made me feel good but old habits die hard. Anyway, I went back to my old ways but when I couldn't find any opiates I would use my leftover subs to get thru withdrawl. In mid February I decided I no longer wanted to live this life of lies, and decided to give Subs another shot. I called the clinic and luckily my old doctor had been fired and I got to see another specialist. Of course I failed my drug test but this doc was understanding and decided to put me on 24 mg/day.

I have been clean for two weeks now and let me tell you it feels so good. It is like I have a new lease on life and I no longer have to wake up everyday wondering how I am going to get pills just to feel normal. I actually feel good about myself again and am slowly fixing the issues that caused me to use in the first place.

Anyway my question. The only issue I have on subs is severe headaches. When I first got back on subs I was taking 32mgs a day b/c I had extra from my first experience. However, after a week of this I realized that was way too much. So now I am taking 8-12mg/day. But my headaches are just as bad. I take Exederin and Tylenol but it doesn't ease the pain much.

Has anyone else experienced severe headaches from Subs, and if so any suggestions would be appreciated?

One more thing has it relates to precipitated withdrawals. I read so much about it and was so scared about going through them. However, during my month relapse I would take 200mgs of oxy a day, and then take a sub the next morning and feel great. Anyway, just thought I would add that if anyone was concerned about pcw.

With that I am done, and will add it feels so good to no longer be a slave to opiates. I am taking it one day at a time and enjoying this new life.

Thanks,

MW

Others will be along to put in their .02cents (adjusted for inflation) but i'll say i've never had a headache from taking Sub so i googled it. The likeliest explanation i found is that opiates can cause headaches by causing misalignment owing to smooth muscle relaxation. I didn't dig any deeper than that but i'm guessing maybe they refer to the ciliary body, which helps change focus from near to far objects. Again i've not had any headaches but i have had vision problems that seem to come and go, and so i've taken to doing eye exercises.

If you reckon Sub is a very powerful opiate even at the lower dose you're taking, you can see (heh) how it might affect your vision.

Good luck to you... i hope you figure it out, not let it interfere with your recovery. Maybe the headaches will go away; i did see reports of that as well.

Hi slavenomore and welcome to our humble forum. Congratulations on your new-found recovery.

I haven't had too many problems with headaches from subs. When I do get headaches tho, I forego the tylenol and aspirin and go straight for the ibuprofen. It's the only thing that works for me.

Glad to have you with us.

Hello and welcome!!

I haven't had any 'extra' headaches from suboxone as of yet. I have heard from others (and read online) that the nalaxone can cause headaches and/or nausea in some who are hypersensitive to it. I don't know how often this happens, but maybe that has something to do with it?? Good luck!!

Thanks for your responses. I'm going to try Ibuprofen instead of Tylenol. Probably a good idea since my liver has probably been through enough!

Have any of you heard about spitting out the juice after it dissolves? I read somewhere that helps with headaches, I tried it but felt I might be wasting my subs.

Thanks again

Welcome to the forum. I too had headaches when I first started taking subs. What I learned (from this site) is that I would not swallow any of the juices when I was taking the subs........I would then spit it out including the pit and just like that my headaches went away. I believe the naloxone in suboxone is what causes the headaches....My doctor switched me from suboxone to subutex which has no naloxone in it. I have not had headaches since. SO.........and it just my opinion...I believe the naloxone was the cause of the headaches. I too took Ibuprofren to help with the headaches. From your history and where you are at I think it would be hard to get your doctor to switch you to subutex but you may want to discuss with him/her on your next visit. I am not a doctor...just an addict in remission......Thanks and good luck......

Thanks ReRaise.

Question for you. What do you mean when you say you spit out the "pit"

Also your right. When I went back to get a new prescription I told the Dr. about the headaches. He said lots of people complain of that and read stuff on the internet and come in with symptoms to get different drugs. I think he thought I was lying to him. But can't blame him b/c I did fail my drug test and am a drug addict. Even though I have never shot up he doesn't know that. Anyway, I am going to try the spit technique and please let me know about the "pit"

Thanks,

MW

Welcome Slavenomore --

I am in the category of headaches on suboxone. I had them as well.

I read and discussed with others about the best 'absorption' method for suboxone. Seems everyone has a slightly different style.

So, here is "my" style and I no longer get headaches.

1- dry my mouth out as much as possible, swallowing all saliva, etc.
2- put the orange pill(s) under tongue once a day. (just to break habit of pills)
3- Leave it there - for me only a little saliva comes then for 15 mins - NO SWALLOWING.
4- at 15 min's - crush up the rest and spread it around my cheeks, mouth, etc.
5- look at the forum, do stuff, whatever - swish around saliva (NEVER SWALLOW) for 30 mins.
6- Spit out the mouth full of saliva at 45mins.
7- Do other things for the next 15 mins - no drink/eat. Total=1 hour

Between finding the right dose, and that method I believe I get the maximum absorption - and when I began this method (especially the spit it out) - my headaches went away.

I may have pulled this method out of another thread - but it works for me. I feel like - 1 hour and the rest of the day I don't need to think about pills! Way worth it - and no headache.

I hope this helps. Good Luck - Right dose, no swallow - my non-medical 2 cents.

As Lathe said you do not swallow...........usually there is a tiny bit of sub left that hasn't dissolved (I call that the pit) and I spit that out with all the salavia juice from th suboxone. I hope that helps........

Thanks everyone for the tips. It works. I now just spit out all the saliva once the pill dissolves, and no headaches. I know for a fact this works, b/c one morning I dosed off while it was dissolving and swallowed and headaches came back.

Update on my progress if anyone is interested:

26 days clean and down to 8 mg of Sub per day. Feel good for the most part. I do think Sub causes pain in my teeth. I read some other threads about this and I am pretty sure I am starting to have tooth decay. Or maybe I have always had sensitve teeth but I didn't feel the pain due to all the opiates in my system. :D

For anyone who may read this that is considering suboxone treatment. Please give it a try, it works. It has completely erased my cravings and I am getting my life back. You have to be ready to change your life, but if you are at that point Suboxone really does help.

Thanks,

MW
