It is pretty much public knowledge that rapper Lil' Wayne is addicted to codeine cough syrup. He has his Styrofoam cup in hand at all times. He is supposed to be going to jail soon or may already be in. Which makes me curious. Would somebody like him be able to take Suboxone or Methadone under a doctors care while incarcerated or is he going to have to go cold turkey?

Hi whodatNOLA, although this doesn't really answer your question, I only posted it in the Member's Only section yesterday!!
Detox in UK Jails.
When an addict is imprisoned in Britain, he has the choice of methadone every other day for as long as he is there, or subutex rapid detox.
The way this works is as follows:
Day 1. 12 mg
Day 2. 8 mg
Day 3. 4 mg
Day 4. 2 mg
Day 5. NOTHING!!!
Usually by day 10 of their sentence they have found the supplier on their wing and are using in their cell after lights out.Bearing in mind the high purity of heroin in the UK (usually over 40%) it's not long before their habit is the same as it was on entry. No wonder there is such a high relapse rate among offenders in our country, this method really needs to be rethought and radically changed.
BTW I have never served any jail time, but the above figures are from first hand anecdotal evidence from several people, who have served time in different prisons all over the British Isles. The treatment is exactly the same in all of them, being laid down by Home Office guidelines.

Perhaps the US prison system has a similar program going?

There is no such program in the US in prison. You go to prison while addicted to narcotics in the US, you suffer withdrawals. Period. I was doing close to 100 bags of heroin per day when I was arrested.

They gave me a couple of Valium the first two days, then told me to "man up"
