My previous doctor will no longer see me because I have BadgerCare now. She doesn't accept BadgerCare and says she cannot take cash from people with BadgerCare.

I need a doctor in Wisconsin - I'm in Green Bay (no doctors up here), and willing to travel to Milwaukee/Brookfield area if it's not a weekly thing.

Looking for doctor that accepts BadgerCare or is low cost (not $300 for first visit) and need to be able to get into them ASAP.

Thank you everyone - stressed and searching.

The reason many docs don't accept BadgerCare is because it pays about 30 bucks for a visit-- and you just can't keep a practice open on that level of reimbursement. Hospitals and large clinics make up for it by getting tens of thousands of dollars for surgical procedures and payments for every little extra service-- things that you don't have in a private office. It would be possible if only a small proportion of patients were on BadgerCare, but when treating addiction, the percentage is more like 60-70%. A high-volume clinic might make it work by having the doc see many patients per hour for a few minutes each... but most docs don't enjoy that type of practice. At least I don't!

BUT..... I used to assume, like your doc, that doctors cannot privately contract with BadgerCare patients. I thought that was the case because of the rules with medicare, that require formal procedures before privately contracting.

Let your doc know that in WI at least, doctors who do not accept BadgerCare CAN privately contract with patients. The only problem is that in order for BadgerCare to fill your prescription, your doc must be registered with BadgerCare. But they have a special registration for doctors that don't accept payment from BadgerCare, that allows their scripts to be covered-- without requiring them to accept their rates for appointments.

Your doc (or you) can find me through my private practice web page-- www.fdlpsych.com .

Tell your doc that it is a very limited process to enroll in this way-- it will take about 10 minutes.
