Well I live in Buffalo New York so we have a very long winter season and let’s just say this is by the worst time of year for me. First I know I’ve said I have a knee injury many times but I should prolly explain what my injury is! Basically you have 4 major ligaments in your knee; there are 3 grades of this injury I being the least II being in the middle and III being the worst. Well when I first hurt my knee I had just a serious Grade II injury but was lucky enough to only have a serious sprain instead of a tear. Well I got lucky every other person/Dr said lucky you want to feel the pain I’m in! Any way I was a Top baseball Pitcher was being recruited by colleges the whole nine yards. My point being I was rushed back to rehab early and instead of being honest and scared to tell the truth I lied and just doped myself up so much that I block out the pain well so I thought but by doing this I turned my grade II into a grade III without evening knowing this till my oxy wore off and well I knew something was wrong cause I heard a pop but just blew off and continued to work out. So I went through that season basically with a tear in my knee but like I said I was so scared to let my Dad down mostly that I would take 200 mgs of oxy b4 I pitched the deeper the season went the worst the pain got. I remember I pitched a complete 3 hit shutout and couldn’t get out of bed the next day and that’s when I rushed to the specialist and found out my worst fear was right I had a tear. When you get a grade III diagnosis it’s time to operate well at this point in time I was already addicted to oxy so I refused the operation thinking like a addict this will give me a excuse to take large doses of oxy contin the rest of my life. So I went on with this terrible pain for a good 4 years just numbing it with pills. Well after I couldn’t continue to play baseball cause the pain was just too much I finally started to relax and not push myself on and make things even worst. So over time my knee sorrda healed itself YEA RIGHT DOC. Any ways this is when my parents and gf finally said enough is enough and it’s time to get clean or find some were else to live and find a new girlfriend that will put up with all the shit you put me through. So luckily well not lucky but my good friend had a serious back injury and got on suboxone for pain management and when I say good friend I mean it he sat on the computer with me and did the whole process of helping me find a Dr accepting and making my first app. I also used marijuana for pain as well and I was a boutique smoker. I’ve been to Amsterdam twice and bunch of other place in the U.S. for underground cannabis cups. But that’s a different story so back to suboxone.

So fast forward 4 years and here I am clean from all drugs besides meds legally prescribed for me. So to the point of this post lol once the weather starts’ getting cold my knee starts to get real tight and the pain is some days as bad as it was when I was playing ball. And I’m just so sick of this pain and not having anything besides suboxone just isn’t enough some days and I’m not allowed to be prescribed any muscle relaxer cause I also use to abuse soma so I have to basically just take more suboxone. I take 16 mgs a day 24 on these real bad days and for the other 3 seasons of the year that’s enough but once the temp. A start dropping below 35 is when I start to have cravings to switch to methadone thinking just maybe it will help but really in the back of my mind the switch is purely based on wanting to get high. So I’m left with this terrible pain some days and just get so fed up and even after 4 years clean I get cravings and this scares me. I just wish I could rewind time and do the operation but its too late now cause only 1 of the 4 is seriously injured and the operation is very costly even with my insurance and the DR was honest with me that too go in just to fix that one is crazy cause the hospital would charge me for the full operation which we all know hear that these operations can buys us houses sometimes cause of how crazy they coast.

SO here I here I am asking you guys what do you do for your pain if cold weather also affects your injury? Muscle relaxers are out of the question all oct pain meds kill my stomach ive been to PT and no help there tried hot and cold heat packs. Is there anything I haven’t tried that works for you?

Hi Bboy -

You've been here for quite awhile and I'm glad you decided to tell us more of your story. It's like we're getting to know you a little bit better. So thanks for sharing.

I don't have an injury like you do, but my fibromyalgia definitely gets worse in the winter. I am, however, (I guess luckily) able to take Zanaflex, a muscle relaxer. It helps a bit. Have you tried glucosamine? Some people swear by it. A friend of mine just convinced me to give it a try and I just started taking it. From what I can tell, it takes a week or so for any relief to kick in.

It's technically for joint care, and I might be wrong about this, but isn't the knee a joint in and of itself? I know it's the soft tissue that you injured, but maybe it's worth a shot to give it a try. You never know, it might help.

I know you said heat/cold packs don't help either. For me, the heat doesn't take away my pain per se, but I put it on my pain and it gives me relief while it's on because basically all I feel is the heat. Have you tried a hot bath? Just another thing that might work. For me the tub works the same as the heating pad - it really helps while I'm in it, but my pain comes back when I cool off. At least I get a break from the pain for awhile though. We've got to take what we can get, even if it's in small doses of relief at a time.

I really hope you'll try the glucosamine. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. This is all I've got.

hey bboy - I'm sorry you're hurting. Are you able to do any physical therapy to help your knee? I tore my ACL and miniscus playing volleyball in high school - I had surgery but they couldn't fix the ligament without doing a graft so they just left the tear. I did PT and wore a crazy custom leg brace so I could continue playing volleyball and softball for the next 2 years.

Anyway. My knee hurts with the cold also, but I've been able to help it a little by strengthening all the muscles that support it. Mostly I just try to ignore the pain but it's a bitch when I have to be on my feet 8 or 10 hours a day at work.

I wish I had better advice for you - it sounds like your injury hurts you more than mine bothers me. Would prescription-strength NSAID's help? Cortisone shots? It seems like they should be able to send you to pain management to get some non-narcotic options looked at.

I hope you feel better soon!

Hey thanks Hat and DOAQ for the replys.

Yea Hat I have not heard of glucosamine but that is something I can def ask my DR about for sure. If you can once you reach a week let me know how it works for you. Yea well that’s the problem I have with the heat packs and baths it will take my pain away at that point in time but from the hot to cold even in the house in December it’s still pretty cold you know. So in a sense that almost makes my pain worst more so just with baths to go from a really warm bath to getting out in a cold bathroom if you know what I mean, and heat packs just don’t do it most days.

But ill def ask my Dr about glucosamine for sure.

Yea Diary I did PT for years while I was still playing ball at first I couldn’t even do it cause it hurt way to much but once the season ended I would go back and it helps very little and the coast is just too much to keep going if it does not work really well I mean it was by far the most expensive Dr I’ve ever visited so that was out of the question. See I was suppose to wear that special bulky knee brace as well but I couldn’t pitch with it on it messed with my balance and wind up to much. And I wouldn’t wear it when I was off the field because it gave me an excuse to take more oxycontin. And I can’t do strengthen exercises too much because it hurts way too much to put too much force on my knee. I don’t know if you deal with this but if I put too much weight on my knee it will literally give out and that pain is so bad. For ex I was on a step latter getting something out the addict for my mom and I had a heavy box and when I put all my weight on my right leg my knee gave completely out I had to pop it back in this will happen to me at least 3 times a month and that’s basically a set back every time and this pain is like a breaking your finger on purpose.

Yea I stay away from pain management Dr Offices cause let’s just say that brings way to many bad ideas in my head!

But ill keep this thread updated!

Well had my DR app today like always every 8 weeks. Anyways talked with him about my knee pain and the cold weather so we went over a few options I talked with him hat about that med you told me about he didn’t think it was for me and we also went over maybe going back on muscle relaxers under very close watch and I declined due to my past with them it’s just too big of risk for me to go back on them. So what we decided to do was put me back on 24 mgs of sub from 16 mgs. And I’m not goanna lie I’m a lil upset about this just cause I knew how long and hard it took me to get down to 16 from 24. But the reason I’m upset about this is cause as soon as I start 24 tomm I know for a fact that its goanna work a lot better do to im given 10 extra pills a month just in case I do need to take extra and ever since winter started I took those 10 extra the first 12 days. Luckily he doesn’t know that I got about 240 plus pills from my left overs of being on sub for 4 years. But anyways the reason I know it will work is because on those days I take extra it makes the biggest difference. But why im worried is I know once winter ends I’m not goanna go back down to 16 cause it will be like im putting myself in pain to do so but I know if I take 24 it wont be as bad.

So ill keep you guys updated but I really hope I can get back down to 16 after winter.
