My first contribution may be so completely 'bad ass' that all y'all feel like you can not measure up, but I encourage you to give it a try anyway.

Funny lyrics, serious lyrics, heartbreaking lyrics...anything that you like. I'd love to hear them all!!

Artist--Led Zeppelin

Song--Dancing Days

Awesome Lyrics---I saw a Lion, he was standing alone, with a tadpole in a jar.

Second contribution,

Alice in Chains

Nutshell

And yet I fight, And yet I fight, This battle all alone, No one to cry to, No place to call home

(The lead singer lost a terrible battle with Heroin addiction. Several of their songs speak of this. HEARTBREAKING.)

I can't quote the lyrics right now, but I nominate Toad the Wet Sprocket and "Rosalea" by Better than Ezra.

Nice thread, Romeo.

I love all the stuff you two put up. I kinda like The Who 'Behind Blue Eyes'. I love this part:

If I swallow anything evil

Put your finger down my throat

If I shiver, please give me a blanket

Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

I had totally forgot about Better Than Ezra, they're going straight to my Pandora Radio. I had heard Rosalia before, but I somehow missed what a great song it is. The unplugged version is blasting my ear drums as we speak. Thanks HatMaker!

Behind Blue Eyes, another amazing choice. One of my all time favorites. I like Limp Bizkit's version of it too, although they don't quite measure up to Roger Daltrey when he starts belting it out. Behind Blue Eyes will be damaging my ear drums here in a second!

Thanks for the suggestions, it's helping to make my boring day go by a little bit quicker.

Good idea for a thread Romeo. Of course, as soon as I read it my mind became completely void of any song lyrics, lol.

This year, I really liked Arcade Fire's song Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains). Here's a bit of it:

Quote:
They heard me singing and they told me to stop
Quit these pretentious things and just punch a clock
These days my life, I feel it has no purpose
But late at night feelings swim to the surface

Cause on the surface the city lights shine
They're calling at me, come and find your kind
Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small
That we can never get away from the sprawl

Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there's no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights.

One of my all-time favorite songs lyrically is Ripple by the Greatful Dead:

Quote:
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Here's the Jane's Addiction cover of Ripple:

That Janes Addiciton video for Ripple is.....WOW. I didn't even listen to a word of the song the first time through I was so enamoured with the video, so I had to close my eyes the second time through and listen to the words...I didn't think I would care for it that much, but I honestly love it. It's a great song! I'm on my fourth time through now, there's something about Perry's voice....it's magnetic?

As I was waiting for the video for Sprawl II to load, I read through the lyrics for Sprawl II and apparently they went right over my head. So, the video loads, I hit play and I'm following through with the words and all of a sudden they make sense....isn't that weird? The words alone went right over my head, but when they were accompanied by the music, all of a sudden they made sense. I just love music so much, it's so cool.

I honestly thought you were going to cite the Cee Lo Greene lyrics....HAHAHAHA, they're from the heart, that's for sure!

I just mastered a song on my martin acoustc m36. I can only play a few songs but brad nowell of sublime is what made me ever pick up a guitar since I never grew up around instruments. But here's the song mainly G and C. GC There's still train coming throughGC I would take it if I could GC And I would not lie to you because Gc Sunday morning soon will come Gc When things would be much easier to sayGc Upon the microphone like a boss djGc No trouble no fuss I know whyGc It's so nice I wanna hear the same song twice gc it's so nice I wanna hear the same song twice Gc Rumor spreading all over my town but it's just Stones and sticks Gc Because on the microphone is where I get my fixGc No trouble no fuss I know why ( chorus again)Gc It's so nice I wanna hear the same song twiceGc It's so nice I wanna hear the same song twice. That's just about all of it. He died of a heroin overdose at age 27 I believe. But I've been practicing his acoustic stuff for about eight or ten years but probably only played four years out of that time but I know a lot of his music if anyone likes his acoustic stuff. Ripple has always been an awsome song. How about john prine anybody? He has wrote a ton of amazing songs for people and nobody knows that they are his lyrics.

Toad the Wet Sprocket has some great songs. One of my favorites is "Hold her down". Many people are offended and don't understand that it's an ANTI-RAPE song. (I guess they don't listen to the lyrics.)

A couple of lines:

And I would have a hard time facing you
This crime, I've seen what a man can do
And I would have died
From all the hell that you've been through

And I know you guys teased me because I like Lyle Lovett, but I'll bring him up again anyway and risk the humiliation.
Here's a wacky song of his called "Fiona":

Way down yonder on the bayou
There lives a little girl-o
Her skin so pale, six feet high
Skinny as a rail and just one eye

And she's the one-eyed Fiona
She's the one-eyed Fiona...

Her daddy, gone to Heaven
Her mama won't like you
Her brother, he's crazy
He just might bite you
Her sister, she's pretty
But she just won't do

She's the one-eyed Fiona...

And oh, you can say she gonna love you
Because you made a little voodoo
Oh, but what they didn't tell you
It ain't up to you, dude, yeah

Oh, you better not cross her
You try to boss her
Then you better duck mister
Here come a cup and a saucer

So if you're going to the bayou
Man, I'll tell you all I know
She's got skin so pale, she's six feet high
And she'll look right through you with just one eye

And she's the one-eyed Fiona...

I can't believe I almost forgot this one. It's "Fake It" by Seether:

Who's to know if your soul will fade at all?
The one you sold to fool the world
You lost your self-esteem along the way, yeah

Good god, you're comin' up with reasons
Good god, you're draggin' it out
And good god, it's the changin' of the seasons
I feel so right, so follow me down and just

Fake it, if you?re out of direction
Fake it, if you don't belong, yeah
Fake it, if you feel like infection
Whoa, you're such a fuckin' hypocrite

You should know that the lies won't hide your flaws
No sense in hiding all of yours
You gave up on your dreams along the way, yeah

Good god, you're comin' up with reasons
Good god, you're draggin' it out
And good god, it's the changin' of the seasons
I feel so right so follow me down and just

Fake it, if you're out of direction
Fake it, if you don't belong, yeah
Fake it, if you feel like infection
Whoa, you?re such a fuckin' hypocrite

I can fake with the best of anyone
I can fake with the best of them all
I can fake with the best of anyone
I can fake it all

Who's to know if your soul will fade at all?
The one you sold to fool the world
You lost your self-esteem along the way, yeah

Good god, you're comin' up with reasons
Good god, you're draggin' it out
Good god, it's the changin' of the seasons
I feel so right, man, follow me down and just

Fake it, if you're out of direction
Fake it, if you don't belong, yeah
Fake it, if you feel like infection
Whoa, you're such a fuckin' hypocrite...

If you decide to listen to this song, remember, it's best turned WAY WAY up...as loud as you can take it.

"Golden" by Jill Scott has helped me in my addiction.

You should check this one out on YouTube.

"I'm taking my freedom
taking it off the shelf
puttin' it on my chain
puttin' it round my neck

I'm taking my freedom
puttin' it in my car
whereever I choose to go
it's gonna take me far.

It really inspires me when I see how far I've come.

Love, Queenie

OK, we seem to have a Smart Aleck in our midst...someone (Hatmaker :D ) thought it would be funny to list a Lyle Lovett song??? Lyle Lovett??? What has the world come to, Lyle Lovett being listed under an awesome thread entitled Greatest Song Lyrics Ever?

You mention some awesome bands like Better Than Ezra, Toad the Wet Sprocket and even the awe inspiring Seether....then the wheels came off the wagon with the Lyle Lovett suggestion. :D :D

Please, Please tell me there aren't any other Lyle 'the style' Lovett fans out there. I don't think my fragile psyche could take it if there were even 1 other Lyle 'loverboy' Lovett fans around!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

ok so heres some songs ive just discovered that i love the lyrics to:

evans blue: shine your cadillac

You can shine your Cadillac
Another way
With the last drop
Of spit
That was left in my mouth
I was watching all your TV shows the night I said goodbye
To the world I know

So raise your chin
And raise a glass
Sing here's to winning this again and again
Sing I don't care what it costs
Is this the look that sells the skin
Are these the names
We lose again and again
Sing I don't care what it costs

also i just got into chimaira which is pretty hard metal- anyways this song is supposedly about his mother who left his father for a richer man-

Greed has caused you to become a monster
Greed has caused you to become so cold
You said you loved him
Then you put him away
‘Til death do us part
Means nothing to you

Greed has caused you to betray your family
Greed had caused you to become so jaded
We’ve got some news for you
Every dollar you save
Will cushion your pillows in hell

You act like we’re blind, deaf and dumb
Betrayal has now left us numb
We’re sorry we can’t escape from
This choice now we all must succumb

ohhhh ohhh ohhh i got another one. this song is one of my favorite slow rock songs and the band got a new singer and sucks now......if i ever get married ( :( ) i wanna dance to this

evans blue - eclipse

We love our tragedies when we're broken in our own little ways
We're broken but we fit together just right
You know, I saw the black inside your eyes
I saw they were eclipsed by mine and they looked just right

When our lights meet, will you know me then?
And will you want to know it?
It feels like I've known you for so long
When our lights meet, will you want me then?
And will you ever know it?
It seems like you've known me for so long

Fun thread! Hmm I can have fun in here.. this song I'll post now may not be filled with the most profound of lyrics but the words coupled with the intensity of Costello's voice is.. holy crap. It's genius.

Elvis Costello's I want you from the Blood & Chocolate album.

Oh my baby baby I love you more than I can tell
I don't think I can live without you
And I know that I never will
Oh my baby baby I want you so it scares me to death
I can't say anymore than I love you
Everything else is a waste of breath
I want you
You've had your fun you don't get well no more
I want you
Your fingernails go dragging down the wall
Be careful darling you might fall
I want you
I woke up and one of us was crying
I want you
You said young man I do believe you're dying
I want you
If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days
You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways
I want you
Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget
I want you
Since when were you so generous and inarticulate
I want you
Its the stupid details that my heart is breaking for
Its the way your shoulders shake and what they're shaking for
Its knowing that he knows you now after only guessing
I want you
Its the thought of him undressing you or you undressing
I want you
He tossed some tatty compliment your way
I want you
And you were fool enough to love it when he said
I want you
I want you
The truth can't hurt you it's just like the dark
It scares you witless
But in time you see things clear and stark
I want you
Go on and hurt me then well let it drop
I want you
Im afraid I wont know where to stop
I want you
Im not ashamed to say I cried for you
I want you
I want to know the things you did that we do too
I want you
I want to hear he pleases you more than I do
I want you
I might as well be useless for all it means to you
I want you
Did you call his name out as he held you down
I want you
Oh no my darling not with that clown
I want you
You've had your fun you don't get well no more
I want you
No-one who wants you could want you more
I want you
Every night when I go off to bed and when I wake up
I want you
I want you
Im going to say it once again til I instill it
I know Im going to feel this way until you kill it
I want you
I want you

Okay, I'm going to post these lyrics but you have to sing along with it. If you don't know the song, skip it.

Bob Dylan Subterranean Homesick Blues Lyrics

Johny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doin' it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coon-skip cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten.

Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin' that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone's tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the DA
Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try, 'No Doz'
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows.

Get sick, get well
Hang around an ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write Braille
Get jailed, jump bail Join the army, if you failed
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders
Watch the parkin' meters.

Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles.

Ha! Rule, you're funny. That songs not playing by the rules...

"Not with Haste"

Your eyes they tie me down so hard
I'll never learn to put up a guard
So keep my love my candle bright
Learn me hard, oh learn me right

Though I may speak some tongue of old
Or even spit out some holy word
I have no strength from which to speak
When you sit me down and see I'm weak

We will run and scream
You will dance with me
They'll fulfill our dreams and we'll be free
And we will be who we are
And they'll heal our scars
Sadness will be far away

So as we walked through fields of green
Was the fairest sun I'd never seen
And I was broke I was on my knees
But you said yes as I said please

This ain't no sham
I am what I am
I'll leave no time
For a cynic's mind

We will run and scream
You will dance with me
They'll fulfill our dreams
And we'll be free
And we will be who we are
And they'll heal our scars
Sadness will be far away

Do not let my fickle flesh go to waste
As it keeps my heart and soul in its place
And I will love with urgency
But not with haste

Machine head-darkness within. Maybe not the greatest lyrics of all time. But i "feel" this song.

Here in this darkess that I lay,
Depression heavy in it's weigh,
And how my body aches to leave,
To sing it's final eulogy.
My sons I love you evermore,
And though the road beckons once more,
I see the damage that I've done,
And search for redemption.
But I am just a broken man,
Whose soul cries out to understand,
How the madness shatters me,
Upon the stage on bended knee,
I scream aloud at skies above,
That answer mute bereft in love,
I struggle not to fall from grace,
I sing the hyms of my disgrace.
