Anyone hear of this new preparation of Buprenorphine called Probuphine? Basically it's a rod inserted under the skin that supplies users with up to six months of daily dosages of Buprenorphine. It's currently pending approval by the FDA, I think. Don't quote me on that as I'm not sure if it was passed or not. But, here's a bit about it from a company, Titan Pharmaceuticals, that want to, or already is, manufacturing it.

Skayda,

last I heard the fda denied their, (titan's) application for approval, citing concerns that there may not be enough medication in the implants to last the entire dosing interval intended. It's been awhile since I read the article and there were other problems cited with it also, but I can't remember what they were. They are supposed to be doing further work for future application and seek approval again at a later date.

My dr told me last week that they have a new form of suboxone that is about the size of a postage stamp and you put it in your cheek. Never heard of this or the inplant before.

The version your doctor is talking about is called Bunavail. It was recently approved by the FDA. It's a buccal adhesive designed to stick to the inside of the cheek and dissolve. The dosage strengths will be different(lower) , because this form of buprenorphine has better bioavailability, meaning more medication will be absorbed into the blood stream. Because it won't be taken sublingually, it won't be diluted by saliva either which makes the amount absorbed varied with each sublingual dose of film or plain bupe tablets. So the amount of bupe absorbed wuth the Bunavail should be more consistent with each dose. This form of medication will also allow you to talk while dosing since it will be stuck to the inside of the cheek, making dosing more convenient also. I don't know if it's in pharmacies yet or how much it will cost, I'm interested in trying it if the price is right.
