Imagine if we were all given a vaccine that prevented us from becoming addicted to drugs in the first place. This vaccine has the potential to eradicate a global scourge that costs the world trillions in health costs, crime, lost productivity and human life. It's relatively inexpensive and could revolutionise addiction treatment in first and third world countries alike.

Unfortunately pharmaceutical companies are largely more interested in long term profits from pushing maintenance treatments like Suboxone, Zubsolv and methadone, and thus the institute behind the vaccine is struggling to find funding for human trials. If you're at all interested or know people who have struggled with addiction to this horrible drug, please consider donating to the Scripps Institute.

For those of us who are already opioid dependent, imagine taking a vaccine that prevented us from getting high off our drug-of-choice in the future. We could ween off our Suboxone safe in the comfort of knowing relapse is nigh impossible. At the moment they're trialling the technology on heroin because of the drug's global implications, but apparently the technology can be easily transposed to other chemical drugs like oxycodone, methamphetamine, cocaine etc.
