My doctor never showed...

Thu Feb 26, 2015 7:21 pm

So, we got 8 wonderful STUPID inches of snow today in my city so half of the city is closed down. I had my monthly suboxone appointment today. I've been on suboxone (16mg) for 9 months now. I've had no problems with my doctor what so ever until now. I understand it snowed. The roads aren't perfect but they are driveable. Anyways, my sub doctor is only open Tuesday's and Thursdays. That's it. I had my appointment today and I kept calling the office all day to see if they were going to be open today and no one answered. I went ahead like a dumbass and showed up to my appointment at 4pm hoping someone would be there, nope. No one. I've been calling all day, and haven't heard from anyone. I have one suboxone film left. That's it.
What should I do? Is there anything I can do? Shouldn't the doctor of called me or a nurse? He could call me in something to get me through the weekend since he missed our appointment. I don't know what to do. Thanks for any and all advice.

Go to your pharmacist. He may, but doesn't have to, give you a three day supply. Cut your dose down enough to last until Tuesday. An ER doctor can also legally give you a three day supply, but again, they do not have to.
good luck.
We live in snow country, which is why I advise people at their second or third visit to have an emergency plan.

Hey BC :)

Well I wanted u to know that happened to me last yr. It came a big snow. I was supposed to be there at 10am. I had called and called and nobody answered so I did like u did, and went on over thinking maybe they'd be there soon and just opening late....I live about 30-40 min away. I was out that day so was supposed to get my refill. I got there and nothing. Waited and waited with other patients in the parking area and nothing. I was in a panic. I went to my pharmacy and all they would do was say....we haven't heard from ur office on any call ins. My luck of course that my pharmacy wasn't one of the cool pharmacies.... even though I spend out the butt every month with them straight cash. I ended up contacting someone through social media lol. I had to go all the way bk home then come bk again around 4pm and finally got my meds. Needless to say I have been traumatized by that incident every time it gets bad weather near my appt time. I should have and still should have an emergency plan. My office is a bit difficult to deal with though cause my Dr isn't there all the time. It's actually been so bad here for a month with snow. We've been trapped for 3 weeks. Every time it starts to get better, we get slammed again. It's so annoying.

If I were u I'd do as the other doc said and def call ur pharmacy, mine just likes to be difficult, urs may very well help u and that's what I'd suggest. Also, if u know anybody that goes to the same Dr, call them up and see if they have an emergency number u can call. It really does sucks that ur office is only open two days a week. I really hope u get ur meds. This situation sucks!! Please let us know what happens.

That's for the advice. I did not the pharmacy was able to send in a 3 day script. I've never heard of that! I will call them asap and see what they say. I really hope I don't end up in the ER. That would be awful. I can't believe this has happened. And that my doctor would do this without even calling. I'm pretty shocked and have learned my lesson. Tomorrow is Friday and the snow is still sticking around so I'm sure they will be closed again. I'm hoping he'll just call me or his nurse will and call me in something for the weekend and Monday till I can see him Tuesday. I did have his personal cell phone # and have texted him a few times here and there when I was getting adjusting to my dose. Unfortunately I lost his number when I replaced my phone with a new one and I haven't asked him for his number again. I hate this. Thank you for the advice.

Hey BC,
Really sorry yojr dr and staff have been so unprofessional in your time of need. There are some out there that have no idea how this is mentally and after a wahile physically. I do not dr bash, but Damn it this is not how it should be when your tryn to save yourself..
I suppose if your real lucky a intune pharm would give you a dose. Same with the ER drs. Hopelly they will..

My adivce BC. Starting tomarrow, you cut that last film you into 3rds. Wait as loug as you can each day. With the halflife of Suboxone you can make it till Tuesday without getting sick and most likely not suffer WD simptoms.
16 mgs is a high enough dose to carry you. With smaller doses of your last film as a booster.
Please try not to panic. And ya, who knows maybe call the drs office tomarrow and possibly make contact..
It ll be ok BC, just milk that last film for three days. It ll help..

Best of luck ...razor

Thank you very much razor. I'm trying my best to be good. I have a ton of pain pills from an old surgery that I'm trying my hardest to not even look at this weekend. I have gone through so much counseling and have changed my life completely. And it's amazing how my mind is freaking me out so bad that I'm willing to go back to horrible old habits to avoid withdrawal. My doctor has always been so insanely professional. And he said he's one of the few doctors who takes patients on days he's open when they don't even have an appointment because he doesn't want anyone to get sick and back slide. But I'm like...what the hell are you doing right now?
So far I'm staying calm and trying to do what you say, I will cut this into pieces and I'm giving it to my (always sober and amazing) husband who can help me this weekend. This type of thing really makes me want to rethink doctors. Is that wrong to say?

BC..
First off, Drs are people too. Haha..we know this. Im very glad to here he is very professional. That tells me he will fix this.
Really try to get a hold ofvthat office tomarrow. I know you will.

Fall back on the things you have learned in therapy BC. Use those . The new things you were taugh. Lean Hard on that hubby of yours..and....Get Rid of those PILLS..at least have hubby hold them. You do know that you would have to be really sick an in wd for them to help you at this point. Andvthe timeline you hsfe plus the 3rds of film, you should make it BC.. Honestly. .you will..I understand it seems like such a small amount, but Buprenorphine is potent and very strong.
You ll see..
If you start feeling panicked and such, go out and take a walk in the snow, or shovel some, anything to take your mind off of it. It ll work. Diversion.

Just dont reach for those pills and set yourself back. .please keeps us in mind and post back this weekend. Let's us know how you guys are doing...

Hi BC,

How are you doing today? Did you get ahold of your doctor?

I know that going from 16mgs per day, down to 3 is not fun...but it's doable. Most of your problem is going to be convincing yourself that you don't need that little extra for a couple of days. You should definitely lean on your husband during this time for whatever you need. Cut that strip into 3 or 4 pieces and be sure he doesn't give you more than that. It's going to be important to keep yourself busy and try not to dwell on how you feel. I would also get those pills out of the house while you still feel strong enough to do it. Even if you can get them to a family member for a few days, it would get the temptation out of your mind. Taking those right now would be the worst thing you could do. It may turn your 3 day challenge into months of finding a new doctor. Depending on how tough he is, if you show up with opiates in your urine it may get you kicked out.

I'm hoping you were able to get in touch with them and they got you into the office today. Let us know how you are and if we can help in any way.

Thank you everyone for being so unbelievably supportive! I'm a member forever now through this site. I'm amazed at the support I've been shown.
Today, Friday, I did get in touch with my doctor's nurse thank God who was able to talk to my doctor and he called me and eight films to get me through till I can see him on Tuesday. I just went to Walgreens to pick them up. Thank you all for the support!!!! Wharf the future now I know if there's a chance of snow to get to my doctor ASAP. Thank you again guys.

I'm so happy to hear the situation is resolved! This is a good reminder for all of us, having an emergency stash for these situations is very important. You never know when something like this is going to happen!
