Just Google "suboxone films" and you will understand what we mean by strips/films. I think that pharmaceutical companies have a larger influence here in the US than they do in the British Isles. Ironic, since the company that makes suboxone is a British company.

Reckitt B. has spent a ton of money convincing doctors here that the films are far superior to the pills. This is because their patent has run out for the pills and now other drug companies can make generic suboxone. Of course, if people are buying the generic pills Reckitt B. is not making any money off of the pill sales. The films, on the other hand, are still under Reckitt B.'s exclusive patent. So, the more people buying the films, the more money they make. Reckitt went as far as telling the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US that the pills that they had been making and selling all along, were now dangerous because children could access the pills too easily!! In other words, they lost their patent on the pills and have now done everything in their power to convince doctors and government agencies in the US that they should only be prescribing the film. Fortunately, the FDA saw through RB's attempt to keep all profits coming to them and started allowing generic suboxone pills to be sold in the US.

Now there are health insurance companies (who are private and make individual decisions for their own companies), who are going to stop covering (paying for) suboxone films and make their patients use the generic, less expensive pills instead.

I know that health care is quite different in the UK, so let me know if something I've written doesn't makes sense to you.

:)
