Hi Guys and Gals,

I'm working on my last paper of the semester and I was researching studies that may provide evidence proving that 12-step, abstinence-based treatment works. I couldn't find anything, but I did find this article from the CEO of a treatment facility bashing medication based treatment. I had to comment and I did. Here's a link to the article:

Great comment Amy! It seems like all these "professionals" wanna give there two cents on something that they don't know too much about. Maybe they should ask someone who's tried abstinence only and suboxone. I respect everyone's journey to recovery regardless if it's abstinence or suboxone or tying urself to a big walnut tree :) and if the way they're doing it works, I say hell yes and congrats! But please give me that same respect on my journey. Like u said Amy, no one gets a medal for who's recovery choice is better, let's just be respectful of each other no matter what recovery plan they have!!!!!

I posted a comment too. Got a bit fired up!

It seems the writer of the article is a 12-stepper convinced that their approach to recovery is the only way. It's sad that the NA/AA programs instill this idea in their members. The traditions even make it against the rules to even mention a different program in the meeting room. ie you can get shut-down or cross-talked to from other members for mentioning the benefits of medication based recovery, or SMART recovery, or a non-12 step rehab. I even got a stern talking to from an older-cleaner-member for talking about SMART recovery to another member OUTSIDE a meeting.

TJ, I just read your comment and I swear it made me tear up. Your passion and truth are so appreciated. You might not get through Richard's thick head, but I'm sure your comment will help someone. The guy has staked his entire career on that false narrative that only 12 step, abstinence-based treatment can work. He's probably making big money as a CEO on that premise. It makes me sick.

But you, my friend, you give me hope.

Amy
