Found this case study from June 2010 about a sub patient with a kidney stone awaiting surgery with a pain level of 10/10. This is his doctor's write up of how to treat his pain.

(I'm trying to find more studies/resources newer than the NIH article on treating acute pain in sub patients. This is the first I've come up with.)
