I've been on suboxone a couple years and just recently dropped from 16 to 8. One of the main reasons was the dose was way to high I felt zoned out and stomach issues. My stomach right now is like a wasteland. I'm afraid to eat because of constipation and I'm losing weight at a pretty fast rate. I take stool softeners bicadryl and gas x. I have a BM every 3-4 days and its just awful I'm in so much pain I literally have to lay on my back and I can't even move. I could drop to 4 mg a day but I'm not sure if that will fix anything. For whatever reason the pain the last few weeks has almost been unbearable. Obviously after I empty my bowels things are ok again for a while. I was a little overweight over 6'1 and 210 I'm down to 175 now and I'm worried I'm going to wither away. Does anyone have solid advice on good supplements and vitamins I can take everyday? Thanks,

Hi Zx10R,

Unfortunately, opiate use gives the user constipation. We have had this discussion many times over the years. What has worked for me always is Metamucil or a generic one. Buy the teaspoon doses, not the tablespoon ones or you'll gag. Here is what you do. After a meal fill a tall glass with water and put in 3 HEAPING tablespoons and mix it up good. Keep stirring as you drink it down or it'll get too thick at the bottom. Then follow it with another full glass of water. Believe me, this will work and no more drugs that'll mess up your system. Plus, everyone needs fiber! This advice was given to me by my doctor over 20 years ago and I continue to take it everyday. And don't skip the second glass of water or it won't work.

There is no reason for you to suffer with this. The fiber is good for you and your colon will be all cleaned out. It may even prevent some colon cancer down the road. Who knows?

Try it, give it a week, then come back and tell me if it worked as good for you as it has for me.

What works for me...and this is proven as it's a source of fiber:

Go to Wal-mart (this is a cheap option) and buy the Walmart brand of instant oatmeal. Get a variety pack...or buy 6 to 8 boxes of different flavors. Each morning, for breakfast...make yourself eat 3-4 packs of this..make it a routine. Even a couple through the day now and then wouldn't hurt starting out....
Talk about getting regular?? this will do it QUICK. I can do this for a week or two..and I'll go EVERY DAY....but if I stop, I resort back to the only going to the bathroom once a week or less...
I never have any problems when I dont eat the oatmeal....no pain or issues with my stomach. And on the plus side, when people tell me that
"I'm full of shit"....I'm literally living up to their terminology!! (pun intended)

Hi Z, You still need to get good nutrition in your body as well as make it easier to go to the bathroom. This is a serious condition if you do not take care of this. Best advice. Use a product called Mira-Lax, dose twice a day until you go to the bathroom then stay pretty consistent on once a day dosing. You can use the less expensive generics, they work just as good. You need to always drink a lot of water!! A lot, it helps you stay regular as well as helps the mira-lax. Now, you also need good nutrition as well as fiber, what I do is go in to the health food section in any store and look for the soup section where they have vegan products. You will find dried split pea soup, rice and beans, black bean with various flavors. They are real easy to fix, you just add hot water and eat a few minutes later. What makes these so good is not only their vitamins, protein, etc., they have a lot of Fiber!! Split pea and black bean are loaded with fiber and you get good nutrition. These, water, mira-lax and I know you will be ok. Also the mira-lax is not a bad product, its not habit forming, very highly recommended when using sub. or narcotic pain meds. Hope that helps you.

I used to eat a lot of oatmeal, I will start again. I have Metamucil pill and powder. I'm going to try taking 15 of the pills per day. I also have miralax. I'm going to religiously take this stuff every day, I should have this whole time, thanks for the advice.

It's only suggested that you use Miralax for 7 days...because of the PEG. Oatmeal is plenty safe though...and it's a natural fiber source.

I did not get constipated or backed up to the point it caused any pain. It did take me a literal hour sometimes in the bathroom, but it did come out just took FOREVER. I actually had cravings for oatmeal I ate it everyday, I also had cravings for dry cereal, any green leafy vegetables I just could not eat enough to satisfy my body craving those things. I also craved natural honey and cinnamon I have always liked white bread but I craved wheat bread while on suboxone. I also craved brown rice something I never really even liked before subs. I guess my body was telling me what to eat so I could go even if it took a while to go.

You could try spitting your dose as well. Leave it in your mouth as long as possible, then instead of swallowing just spit out what's accumulated in your mouth. This will prevent the buprenorphine from binding to the opioid receptors in your gut and slowing down your metabolism.

Given we do absorb some of our dose in our stomach, you may find you'll need a higher dose to get the same effect once you start doing this.

I've been spitting out my dose for the last year. I've always just taken two stool softeners but I've always had a problem with constipation. I can't have sex with my wife either, well within the last six months its been really hard. Do any of you take Viagra?

This subject has come up many times in the past. I dug up one thread you might be interested in resurrecting.

Sex Drive and Suboxone

Age, dose, and other medications play a part with a person's libido. Plus the embarrassing part of bringing it up to your doctor. I have and he just smiles and says it is very common. When I got rid of the Effexor and got my dose below 4 mg's it made a big difference. Talk to your doctor about it, especially if you're young.

Just wanted to let everyone know, for me anyway, Metamucil works really well. I'm taking 5 pills per day with 2 gatorades.
