Hi there,
I'm scheduled for breast augmentation on Thursday 7/20/17. I've been on Suboxone for about 10 years. Currently on a super low dose of less than .25mg a day. I have 2mg strips I cut up super small to where they are in 1/8mg pieces. I take one in the morning, and 1-2 at bedtime. I have tapered from 2mg to less than .25mg in about 6 months time. Recently more aggressively because I really want this surgery to happen.

I've tried skipping a dose to make the next jump but I feel WD symptoms creep up and I cave and take a piece.

My plastic surgeon is aware and my sub doc is also aware. They both say to stop taking 3 days prior to surgery. After reading horror stories of post op pain control, I'm worried. My surgeon said I get Norco 5 #40 with 1 refill, and that's it. My sub doc won't prescribe any pain meds, for obvious reasons.

Backstory, I had a unplanned c section in October 2016 and was on 2mg at that time. I had taken my last dose 24hrs (give or take) prior to the procedure. They had to throw the book of pain meds for any pain relief during the surgery. It was awful. Post op, I was given Norco 5 standard dosing. Norco worked for like an hour then I was aching. I'm pretty sure I was in WD my week stay in the hospital. Once I got home, I re introduced Sub and felt a 1000% better.

Now I'm unsure what to do. It's 5 days before my surgery and I just don't think I can stop at this point. Insomnia, restless legs, body aches all start around 15 hours after my last dose. Crazy that such a small amount can affect me like this. Do I stop, or do I keep on it and take the Norco also? So confused and scared.

Hello Alicia welcome and I wish u lots of luck on ur upcoming surgery. I hope everything goes well.

Here's a link to Dr Junig's Talkzone blog about surgery and post op pain while taking suboxone. Now I'm not great at links because I'm using my phone, but I'm going to try :) u can also go to the search function and type in post op pain on suboxone. There's plenty of ppl have successful pain control while continuing to take their buprenorphine.

I wonder if your sub dr can prescribe you SUBUTEX instead (which doesn't have Narcan in it) just for the couple days before surgery. If you are taking suboxone with narcan in it, the narcan will reverse the narcotics they give you, no?

I thought the naloxone in the Sub is only there to prevent the drug from being injected.

I'm going to reach out to a pain management doc tomorrow to see if he can follow me for post op pain.

I'm Just terrified to wake up from surgery in immense pain. I'm expecting moderate pain from what I've heard and read, but obviously I don't think anyone should have to endure a major surgery without any type of pain relief.

I work in a hospital, and we give narcan who take too much opiates, because it reverses the effects of opiates. so I'm thinking it its in your system, the pain meds might not work as well. let us know what he says! :)

good luck alica. Hopefully all will go well. I am on two mg of suboxone and my experience is that 15 mg of hydrocodone works for pain for me. I don't have any feelings of intoxication, just pain relief. Years ago I had surgery and was RX oxycodone. I had difficulty with the pain control only lasting 1-2 hours. The anesthetist said that hydrocodone would last longer- and for me it did, 3 1/2 hours. I had pain the last 30 minutes before I could get more pain meds, but overall worked well. Hope it works well for you. Cold packs are helpful for the inflammation.
