How much do our genes/ family history have to play in our problems getting addicted to drugs/etc? Many in my family have had alcohol problems, including me yrs ago....many smokers, me too but now I'm " vaping " my nicotine. Are we just prone to be addicted to substances that make us feel good? Genes?

Thats a really good question papacraner, and i dont really have a difinitive answer for you. I believe our genes/family history can play a part in afdiction. I also believe that ANYBODY can become an addict if the right circumstances exist. It is my belief that addiction is an underlying symptom of other problems..like depression or anxiety ect or a lack of coping skills so a person may reach for substances instead of dealing with problems in healthy ways. I certainly am not an expert...just somebody who is also trying to understand the reasons behind addiction. It would make sense that family history can play a role i.e if a person grows up in an enviroment where their parents use drugs or alchol as a way to cope they may do the same when they get older. Now as far a genes go, im not sure if some people are just born with specific genes that make them more prone to addiction....im curious to learn though...

Watched a few of the videos and I can't say anything scientifically...but I'm from a family of addicts. My mom was by far, the worst in terms of the amount of time she's been an addict, and number of different drugs she's done.
Everything from meth, coke, K8s, acid...and she started with drinking when I was conceived (at age 15 in Slidell, LA at my dad's party). He was 18, and my grandmother threatened to get him with statutory rape..so he fled for the Marines, went to Beirut and guarded the embassy over there for 3 years. I have a LOT of respect for my dad now, even though I didn't meet him until I was 24. (Now 34).
