There is a good article in the NY Times health section today about addiction. If people suffering from addiction do not understand what addiction is, then how do they expect to treat it? I think thats why we see alot of people getting on sub. and then worrying about getting off as soon as possible. When its understood that there has been a change in the brain due to addiction ( not just the effects of drugs, but the actual creation of different pathways due to our behavior while addicted), I would think people would want to address these physiological changes through therapy and counseling. Not just getting on sub. and getting off sub. The sub. is what gives people an opportunity to do the things ( counseling and therapy) to facilitate the changes in the brain needed to lead a life with thier addiction in remission. Doctors can now do a residency in addiction medicine and this will help because alot of people have had Dr.s' who know next to nothing when it comes to chemical dependency.
